FACILITIES

  • The Trust hosts the Liverpool TB Research Centre.

  • The Trust houses one of the largest Critical Care Units in Europe.

  • The Respiratory Medicine department provides a comprehensive service for patients with lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, adult cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis , interstitial lung disease and the diagnosis of sleep related respiratory disorders.

  • The Pulmonary Function laboratory provides a full range of pulmonary and oesophageal investigations, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

    This department also provides an award winning primary care spirometry service for patients attending the hospital and also externally in a large number of local GP surgeries.

  • The Service User Research Endeavour (SURE) Group. The hospital is recognised as a national leader in the involvement of patients and families in research.

    The Trust vision of service user involvement in research led to the establishment of the Service User Research Endeavour (SURE) Group with patients and families given wide responsibilities in the context of research.

SPECIALISM

  • A single site specialist hospital serving a population of 2.8 million people across Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales & the Isle of Man, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital provides the full range of heart and chest services with the exception of organ transplantation.

  • One of the largest and busiest lung surgical units in the country, providing a complete tertiary service to the surrounding region in respect to all lung surgery (with the exception of transplantation).

  • The Trust has the most experience in the country of “off pump” or beating heart CABG: a technique to carry out the grafting without stopping the heart. Not only are there many benefits to the patient but also to the hospital in terms of resource usage.

  • One of the busiest aortic aneurysm surgery hospitals in the UK, performing 150 Aortic procedures per year.

  • The Trust houses the busiest Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Centre in Merseyside/Cheshire undertaking more than 100 oesophagogastric resections per year.


RESEARCH

  • The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a dedicated academic and applied health research centre with the primary responsibility of designing, implementing and reporting of single-centre and multi-centre clinical trials. The trials unit has newly established links with the Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit, with our staff having an active role at LCTU. The trials unit also hosts several industry-sponsored trials and has attracted many such collaborations in the past two years. The unit also has historical links with the Royal Brompton CTU.

  • The Clinical Research Laboratory supports research activity throughout the trust, in particular Clinical Trials. Its two laboratories have facilities for the preparation and analysis of blood and tissue samples, with 80°C and liquid nitrogen cold storage and facilities for the analysis of samples by ELISA and flow cytometry. The lab also houses facilities for tissue culture, including the extraction and growth of primary human vascular cells, vascular progenitor cells and cardiac stem cells.

  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has a team of research nurses who work in both commercial and non-commercial trials and research leads run some ground-breaking studies; the HEAT-PPCI trial is a good example of a major randomised controlled trial run exclusively at LHCH. The research team also contributes to large national and international studies as well as local pilot studies, all of which aim to make significant advances in the treatment options offered to patients. 

  • The newly refurbished Research Unit houses the Research, Clinical Quality and Informatics functions of the trust. This acts as a knowledge hub where staff have access to clinical databases and the analytical support required for their research.

  • The trust also has a designated Research Clinic; a self-contained building comprising three clinic rooms, one of them adapted for exercise physiology testing, separate waiting room and reception areas.

  • The Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science (ICMS) is an exciting new innovation drawing on the combined clinical expertise of its founding partners: Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; Royal Brompton; Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. Supported by its academic partner Imperial College London, the Institute is the first of its kind in Europe, delivering clinical research programmes that translate directly into clinical practice. The Institute aims to improve outcomes for patients with coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, congenital and inherited heart disease, and diseases of the aorta and valves through ground breaking research.

UNIQUE RESOURCES


TECHNOLOGY

  • The Trust houses nine theatres including the UK's first Hybrid Operating Theatre - a surgical theatre equipped with advanced medical imaging devices such as fixed C-Arms, CT scanners or MRI scanners, enabling minimally-invasive surgery that is less traumatic for the patient.

  • The Trust has have five cardiac Catheter Laboratories (Cath Labs) - three for coronary intervention and two for heart rhythm management. The labs are supported by three forward wait areas and a three bed recovery unit.

  • The Trust is one of the busiest pacemaker implanting hospitals and ablation centres in Europe and the first centre in the country to provide Biventricular Pacemaker patients with cardiac rehabilitation - as a result of which, patient benefits were almost doubled.

    Currently they are one of only a handful of hospitals worldwide evaluating leadless defibrillators. The trust a supra-regional service for the extraction of pacemakers and the implantation of epicardial pacing leads.

    The Trust is at the forefront of pacemaker and defibrillator research and has piloted new technologies in the past decade to provide patients with the best possible care.

  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is one of only a few hospitals in the UK that performs minimally invasive Mitral Valve Surgery.

COLLABORATIONS

  • The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) has collaborative links with investigators at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moore’s University. Other external collaborators include the Clinical Trials and Evaluation Unit at the Royal Brompton, London. The CTU has established collaborative links with Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit.

  • First trust in the UK to obtain a Hybrid "clean air" Operating Theatre.
  • First NHS hospital in the UK to provide a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) service: a new technique that offers an alternative to conventional valve surgery in high-risk patients.
