RLBUHT wins innovation in healthcare award

 

A team from The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust (RLBUHT) has been selected by the Health Foundation, an independent health care charity, to be part of its £1.5 million innovation programme, Innovating for Improvement. 

 The third round of the Innovating for Improvement programme is supporting twenty health care projects in the UK with the aim of improving health care delivery and/or the way people manage their own health care by testing and developing innovative ideas and approaches and putting them into practice.

 The initiative from the Dialysis Unit at The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust aims to implement a new nurse-led approach to providing improved, personalised, coordinated, multi-disciplinary care in new haemodialysis patients. Commencing haemodialysis is a time of significant risk, and patients experience high levels of physical and psychological distress. This project will involve testing a new nurse-led pathway that will provide patients with better coordinated, personalised treatment plans, with the overall aim of improving the patient experience and of reducing the mortality rate of patients starting haemodialysis.

 Over the course of the programme the team will develop its innovative idea and approach, put it into practice and gather evidence about how the innovation improves the quality of health care.

 The team will be led by Dr Asheesh Sharma, who will work closely with Sister Vicky Ashworth to deliver the project. 2Bio Ltd’s Impact Science Team provides innovation services to RLBUHT and has supported the development of this project from a very early stage.

 Dr Sharma, Consultant Nephrologist and Innovation Lead, RLBUHT said, “ Having recognised the potential to improve the quality of care for this vulnerable group of patients, we are really pleased to have secured this award and now look forward to implementing our ideas. We have pulled together a strong team to deliver this project that involves our nursing team, the clinicians, our patients, our Service Improvement & Excellence Team, data analysis expertise from our Business Intelligence Team and support from our Innovation Support Team provided by 2Bio Ltd. We can’t wait to start making a difference for our patients.”

 Dr Charley Ward, Senior Business Consultant at 2Bio said, “We are delighted that this award has been made, it is a great outcome for all the hard work the team has put in so far. We’re looking forward to getting on with the task to make sure that patients at RLBUHT and nationally will benefit from this important innovation in dialysis care.”

 “Our aim is to promote the effectiveness and impact of the teams’ innovations and show how they have succeeded in improving the quality of healthcare, with the intention of these being widely adopted across the UK.”

 The programme will run for fifteen months and each project will receive up to £75,000 of funding to support the implementation and evaluation of the project.
