COVID-19 research update – Liverpool University Hospitals

COVID-19 RESEARCH STUDIES

Liverpool University Hospitals (LUH) is not just on the frontline treating COVID-19 patients, we are at the forefront of the global research efforts to defeat SARS-CoV2, the coronavirus too. We have 11 studies actively recruiting with over 700 participants currently involved in these studies.

A special thank you to the research teams and ward teams as LUH is currently the top recruiter to the ISARIC study looking at the biggest national dataset of data and tissues on COVID-19. A particular thanks to Dr A Cross who has supported the laboratory sampling for this study.

At the Royal Liverpool site, in collaboration with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) on the SAFER study, over 100 front line staff have been recruited in a single week to investigate their immunity. The trust is a top recruiter through the Aintree site for the CovidSurg (Cancer – Head and Neck) study. Whilst the RECOVERY study will look at how various current drug combinations can be used to treat patients in order to discover a standard pathway that can support patients to recovery.

We have mobilised our research workforce into ‘COVID-19 Response Teams’. Our infection, respiratory medicine and critical care research teams are leading the way with recruitment into these studies. We could not achieve such high recruiting numbers without the research nurses working closely with ward staff in offering patients access to the new and emerging treatments.

Working in partnership with the University of Liverpool (UoL), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Liverpool Health Partners (LHP) it is our research programme that will give our patients the chance to access the very latest treatments.
