The latest on our Research Themes and Life Courses

Cardiovascular

A major cause of death and disability in our region, and one we are committed to tackling.  Starting this month, research seminars have been arranged to share research to-date and explore future collaborations.

Cancer

Professor Andy Pettitt, Programme Director for Cancer and Dr Matina Tsalavouta, Programme Manager, are consulting with key stakeholders on developing the Cancer Strategy. Andy is leading on work to build clinical communities around identified leaders in gastrointestinal/colorectal, lung and cardio-oncology.

Infection

Dr Stacy Todd, LHP’s Programme Director for Infection has returned from parental leave.

LHP has continued to support Liverpool’s bid for BRC status in 2021, adopting a cohesive, inclusive approach across the City. Focussing on NHS-facing anti-infective research, we will continue to work collaboratively to define and focus plans for the bid, providing updates and information via LHP Board and Liverpool R&D Directors meetings.

Digital & Informatics

LHP continues to develop its full business case Civic Data Co-operative (CDC) submission to Liverpool City Region (LCR) Combined Authority, having successfully completed both internal and external panel outline stages. The LCR CDC is a trustworthy data and digital innovation support service designed to ensure the people of LCR’s data, especially from health and social care, are protected and used to improve local services, fuel discoveries and build the region’s economy for all.

News from our Life Course Themes

Work on all life courses continues to progress well with particular achievements made recently in the area of Starting Well.

Starting Well

We have continued working with partners to generate key priorities for the programme

  • In September, we completed the first round of our Delphi consultation process, receiving over 60 responses with all partners taking part.  The second round is now underway
  • Three partner workshops will be held October/ November to further refine our priorities into meaningful programmes.  The workshops will also help us to start building the Starting Well community
  • We have been awarded £5m by Liverpool’s Wellcome Trust for the ‘Children growing up in Liverpool (C-GULL)’ programme, a city-wide collaboration with the University of Liverpool, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Liverpool City Council. The UK’s first new birth cohort for two decades, the cohort study will recruit 10,000 first born babies and their parents in the Liverpool City Region.  It will address fundamental questions about the early life origins of health and wellbeing, including how childhood social disadvantage affects life chances.
